The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
