Jurgen Klopp admits coming back to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that rejoining the club is an option. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful nine-year spell which brought a European Cup triumph and the Reds’ first league title in 30 years, has since taken on positions as head of global soccer for Red Bull and providing guidance for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the Premier League last season, but many fans holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the idea of his potential comeback. During an extensive chat, he told Steven Bartlett: “I stated I won't manage a different club in England. Therefore should it be the Reds...yes. In theory, it could happen.”
“I’m 58, so I might decide later on, it's uncertain. Must I choose now? If so, I wouldn't return. Luckily, I don’t have to do that. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about which situations must arise to bring him back to management, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I don’t even know exactly, My present work fulfills me,” he said. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing during downpours through long matches; I'm glad to skip media briefings multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the players having a nice chat, I appreciate that. Success was frequent so there was often a very good mood at the club. Remaining with me is the captain's chuckle vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise for his successor, acknowledging his role for the adjustments that won the league last campaign. They've been defeated four consecutive matches in all competitions following significant transfers, though he denied the notion of it representing a slump.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. The French striker, excellent performer. This is a well-built well-judged squad. You don’t have to worry regarding the Reds, things will improve.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of the Portuguese star, a 2020 acquisition while in charge, along with the consequences at the club. The Portugal international died tragically in a road accident alongside his brother recently.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding the player himself, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the dressing room without him in it. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A profound tragedy for his teammates also. Not a single person will ever use it to justify results yet it's the reality. Being in that space where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that on a personal level is challenging. Overwhelming.”
