Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
