Citizens have assembled around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A prominent representative familiar with the talks said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the morning session finished without tangible results, because of differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No place seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she added.

Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Research now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israelis desire the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, mourners came together to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the night falls, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the south region of the city said two more fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south, medics said.
