California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor remarked when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to withhold federal funds from California and warned revoking the authority to provide trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he said, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that led to loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under federal law.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The notion that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
