The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives shortly after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
